I have an alert set up on eBay to show me when Mobile Scouts come up for sale. (I'm just curious -- one is enough for me.) This baby needs some TLC. Oooof.

Yes, this blog still lives. Post some info about your summer plans, whether you're restoring a poor little mistreated camper, or taking your well-loved camper out and about. I'll be doing the same; we need to get out more this year!
AmyAMYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11333769544724745564noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7234857209740225429.post-1483123273701817512016-02-04T10:16:00.002-08:002016-02-09T09:54:19.906-08:00What's it worth?Peeps always ask me what their camper is worth. Ones found abandoned in an old field. Ones that have continued to see gentle use, but are essentially all original. Ones that have been completely renovated, with every attention paid to authentic detail. And, most often... ones that have been renovated with very little commitment to authenticity.

My answer to all questions is more or less the same:

Hell if I know.

Ahem, er, I mean, "It all depends."

First, it depends upon the condition of the camper -- and not just how it looks, but what condition the bones are in. I've seen a sparkly new "renovation" on a trailer frame that was about to break in half due to rust.

Next, since we are talking about a vintage product, IF work has been done, was it true to the original design? Especially in a Mobile Scout, if you remove the triangle window... value goes down. If you change the paint scheme... value goes down. These old items have the most general market value when work done to them was intended to maintain the original design details.

What will the market bear? Are you in an area where camping is hot? Where pulling around a cute little retro is hot? An area with high population? Or out in the middle of nowhere? All these things play a role.

And perhaps the biggest element -- which some people don't want to/cannot admit? How much do you want to buy it, or sell it? If you see something unique that you really, really want -- then it's worth whatever amount of money you'll take out of your pocket. And if you really, really want to sell it... then you'll set the price to match what someone out there is willing to pay.

Here's a new retro that's listing for almost $10,000. I'll hold my opinion on that, because I'm not in the market to buy a camper, so who cares what I think?

http://www.tincantourists.com/classified/showproduct.php?product=10081&title=1965-mobile-scout&cat=3

And another.

http://www.tincantourists.com/classified/showproduct.php?product=10036&title=1962-mobile-scout&cat=3#at_pco=cod-1.0&at_si=56b392a80aec15f1&at_ab=per-3&at_pos=0&at_tot=8

In short, TinCanTourists and other sites that have available campers is the best way to get a ballpark. But if you think you're going to strike it rich with the old mold infested, rotted hulk you found in your cousin's friend's back field... think again. Most of the beautiful renovated campers you see are labors of love.

And worth every penny.

My apologies to those who have ordered in the past few weeks. I ran out of stickers, life got a little hectic, and I'm just now surfacing to deal with two Mobile Scout priorities:

1 - MORE stickers. Ordered and should be here in about ten days. I'll get all outstanding orders out within two days of getting the stickers.

2 - function of mobilescoutmadness.com domain. I have that domain registered for a good long time, yet at some point the domain redirect to this blog ceased to work. Which is, of course, just freakin' lovely given it's that domain name that's on the stickers. I spoke to my host today, who helped me fix the issue, and they said it should be propogated around the globe in 24-48 hours.

Keep on posting your finds, projects, and experiences in the discussion forum.

I love it when people send me emails with their lovely projects and canned hams on the road -- but would really prefer if you share with the world! I know I'm not the only one that enjoys seeing what others are doing.

Much love to you all, and your little campers, too!
Today this little gem hit my mailbox:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/181671665447?item=181671665447&viewitem=&sspagename=ADME:SS:SS:US:1120&vxp=mtr

It's a single hubcap... priced at $400.00! Yikes. Of course, a fair price for something is whatever the market will bear. Would you spend $400 for one hubcap? What's the most expensive piece you've bought to complete your Mobile Scout camper restoration?AMYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11333769544724745564noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7234857209740225429.post-17002534920088168522014-08-26T09:01:00.003-07:002014-08-26T09:01:38.789-07:00Beautifully restored Mobile Scout going on eBay. This is a uniquely beautiful restoration. As I type the bid is $7350, and the listing notes the reserve price has not yet been met.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/321501813630?forcerRptr=true&item=321501813630&viewitem=&sspagename=ADME:SS:SS:US:1120

A number of details on the outside and inside make this a pricey restoration.

This summer, I think I've gotten more questions about what a trailer, restored or otherwise, is worth. With vintage items like this, the answer is never easy. It boils down to -- whatever the market will bear. As there are only a small number of people interested in vintage campers, relatively, you might post a camper in one state for a price and have no one interested, while in another state you'd have people fighting over the same camper posted at twice the price.

Restoring campers will be, for most of us, a labor of love. It's not about the money.

So what is this camper worth? Whatever you're willing to pay to get it.AMYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11333769544724745564noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7234857209740225429.post-89491288698085891532014-08-11T09:07:00.003-07:002014-08-11T09:07:42.694-07:00Amazing Mobile Scout vintage camper paint jobWow. Molly sent me a photo of her very unique 1960 Mobile Scout. A local artist did the exterior of a local street scene in Telluride, CO. Local volunteers fixed the camper up. The original sticker is inside, stating it's a 1960.

She's named it 'Mags' as it's a guy magnet. :-)

Wow!
I've been keeping what people send me and putting them on Flickr. But Pinterest... now THERE is the place to go for some awesome photos of Mobile Scouts in their full glory.

Check it out. On Pinterest, just search for "Mobile scout". Or click the link below.

http://www.pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=mobile%20scoutAMYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11333769544724745564noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7234857209740225429.post-87567283318235883052014-07-14T10:35:00.000-07:002014-07-14T10:35:00.606-07:00What's a vintage camper worth? People often ask what their camper is worth. Or, what would be a good price for the camper they see sitting out in the field under a tree, so they can start trying to talk the owner into selling it to them for a deal?

That question is very difficult to answer. There is no blue book for vintage campers. Also, the truth lies not so much in the make, model and year of the camper, but rather what type of condition it is in, and how much work (and of what type) someone will have to put into it.

And overall -- something is worth as much as someone else is willing to pay for it. And sometimes, even if you double that, the person who has it isn't interested in selling it. :)

I've heard stories of people being PAID to tow an old, dilapidated old canned ham camper off a property, and after putting $3000 and hundreds of hours into restoration, selling the camper for $6000.

Most stories are very similar to ours: you have no idea what you are doing, and you somehow fall in love with a camper that doesn't look too bad, she just needs a little work. So you shell out $1500, and once you start peeling back the inside paneling you realize the entire thing has to be taken down to the deck and all redone. So, untold amounts of money and hours of blood, sweat and tears later, you end up with a lovely little camper you wouldn't part with for any amount of money. (We have people stop by many times a year as we're in the yard and ask if they can buy our camper. Nope!)

But, just for your curiosity, here is an adorable little Mobile Scout which went on eBay recently.
That's right, you didn't hear much about camping -- we haven't done any yet this year!

Doesn't mean we don't think about Mobile Scouts. The questions keep rolling in, as do sticker requests. I'm about halfway through the recent order of the awesome, high quality stickers. Get yours today before they run out! (See previous post for information about ordering stickers, or see the right sidebar.)

When I reorder, I *AM* going to order LARGE, black only outline stickers, suitable for putting on the front or rear of the camper. They will look super over the front window, or below the back window.

So help me get rid of the current stock of stickers. I WILL order more of them as well. :)

I love receiving photos of the well loved, well kept Mobile Scouts that are still out there! Here is Gladys, a very stylish gal from Oklahoma!
Spring brings emails to my inbox of new vintage camper enthusiasts, and often old timers, too, seeking an opinion on whether what they have is indeed a Mobile Scout. Sometimes it's easy, such as when your camper has the original cabinetry and you find something like this on the inner door.
Having six people order stickers already is awesome -- we're a small bunch, and this is a great response. :) While supplies last, those who order the NEW stickers will receive two of the smaller, older stickers for free as well. Woo hop! ;)

They are big, durable and will look great on your Mobile Scout, or anywhere else you care to put them! They are printed vinyl, and should wear for years outdoors.

I have 50 of each, and reorder is easy, so clean me out. :) For $4.00 via PayPal, I'll send you one of each sticker (the red and blue sticker is 8" across, and the orange one is 6" across). That's pretty much just covering cost of printing and mailing them. I'm happy to donate my time in design and printing in order to contribute something nifty for those of us that love these old campers.

First, MobileScoutMadness.com has been registered. It will point here to this Blogger blog (effective tomorrow, probably). Don't worry, you can always use the old web address, too.

Most exciting, though... NEW STICKERS HAVE BEEN ORDERED.

Yes, yes, I know some of you have heard this for a long time. And, for that please accept my sincerest apologies. But... it's already been done! Art is uploaded, fee has been paid, and in about two weeks there will be TWO great new stickers available.

First is a mondo 8" wide sticker taken straight from some photos people sent me of their faded and peeling units. It's bold in color, red and blue. The original address is there -- it's just an homage, though, don't go there looking for a trailer manufacturer.
They are bigger, the color will be clearer, overall the quality is MORE AWESOME.

And sometime later, I'll be updating the blog template into something more modern and stylish. Stick with me, and keep those photos of your beautiful Mobile Scout trailer projects coming!

Once they arrive, I'll post pics so you can get a better understanding of size, along with a quick PayPal link so you can order your very own!

The past few years have shown us a few new trailer designs that gave nods back to vintage style. The other day, however, we saw an ad on the tele for Curtis Trailers, and the unit rolling down the road was clearly designed right on the lines of a vintage camper. It was beautiful, I won't lie!

This set me a Google'ing, and look what I stumbled upon.I found this Scout concept trailer, making the rounds by Airstream Marketing in 2009. Um... look at that butt! What does that look like to you, hmmmm? But what a beauty! The link I found (http://www.airforums.com/forums/f318/airstream-scout-concept-vehicle-52070.html) calls this unit the Scout, and it was a collaboration with auto designer Bryan Thompson and Airstream. Lightweight, with elements of signature Airstream style.

And their signature price tag, I'm sure.

Alas, there is no mention of the Scout on the Airstream web site. Damn, that's too bad. She's a beauty!

So I hit Curtis Trailers and sought out the vintage styled beauty I'd seen. It looks like it was the 2014 Riverside Whitewater 155.

http://curtistrailers.com/inventory/rvlisting/detail/6654/

Yikes! It's a cutie. But $18,906.79! Of course it has AC, a microwave, cable tv hookup, blah blah blah. But that comes out to well more than $1000 a foot in length! But when you compare it to the T@B... well, that might just be a cheap option. Looks like this is made by Riverside RV, a maker of Retro travel trailers. Wow! Check out their options:

I have one camper that I don't use often enough, but somehow that doesn't stop me from looking at others, new and old!AMYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11333769544724745564noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7234857209740225429.post-9247344732311629262014-04-20T12:08:00.000-07:002014-04-20T12:08:29.895-07:00Spring is in the air, and camping fever is starting to spread. As spring blooms, people's interest and activity around camping grows as well! The blog is generating more emails with questions, pics of beautiful Mobile Scouts, and more!

Look what I found on eBay today! And no, I haven't bid on it. ;)

1962 Mobile Scout in Pearl, MS

Interestingly, it looks like a Mobile Scout, but the plaque inside shows it was manufactured by Contempori Mobile Homes in Arlington, TX.

Mobile Scout Mfg was also in Arlington, TX (as were many, many other manufacturers). From all I've learned, the industry back in that time was just bustling. Shops were opening, closing, merging frequently. Staff jumped from the larger manufacturers to open their own shops, sometimes taking a few of the tricks they'd learned with them.

Even some of the people working in the industry find it difficult to determine just what type an unknown unit is.

Not to mention, in the years that has passed since then, renovation projects may have hidden or changed existing distinctions, or mixed and matched a little -- I've seen a few triangle windows that were on things which were CLEARLY not a Mobile Scout.

This one's a mystery; it looks like a Mobile Scout for the most part... but... Contempori? The serial number isn't in the usual format as a Mobile Scout. The wheel cut-outs are wrong. The door handle is on the opposite side of the door compared to what I usually see.

What do you see? Do you know anything about Contempori Mobile Homes? Help fill in the blanks!AMYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11333769544724745564noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7234857209740225429.post-38592953318325657162013-08-28T20:17:00.001-07:002013-08-28T20:17:17.274-07:00An adorable little camper redo. Somehow I stumbled across the Bella Pop blog of Brandy Frank, with her wonderful stories, photos and design of a vintage camper redo. (Does that little triangle window look familiar?) I found the endeavor -- to live in the tiny space -- and the resulting lessons learned to be fun and fascinating!

Bop on over and check it out.
The price on it is a bit high, but... you can't get them anymore, and it looks like it's new with keys. Someone might be really happy to find this.
Jim recently told me additional information about it.

All Mobile Scout trailers had a serial number on the roadside of the A frame. The number would look something like this: 64 MS 17SC 2222 all trailers had this basic format. The number described the year, brand name, floor plan, and number. Number was located on roadside just behind coupler.

(Roadside of the frame means underneath.)

Another frequent question I receive is, "Is this a Mobile Scout?" Jim provided some very valuable information on this question, as well. The answer to that question is pretty easy to arrive at, based on the body style. While the door is a quick give-away, I've seen Mobile Scouts with replacement doors, and Mobile Scout doors that have made their way onto all manner of other types of trailers.

The body style remained the same from 1956 through 1964; it's the "canned ham" sort of round front, sloped back that we all know and love. In 1965, a change was made to the shape to add a truck and more head room. That was built on through 1979. When looking at a trailer to see what kind it is, all the details tell the story: what do the sides look like around the wheels? Where are the windows, what size and style are they?

What fun discovering the past stories of these beauties.

Part of running this blog has been seeking out sources of information in hopes of gathering, saving and offering up information about the Mobile Scout. Imagine my thrill when in February, a gentleman named Jim contacted me... to make a long story short, he was Production Manager for Mobile Scout From 1964 to 1978.

And he's FULL of information, and has TONS of photographs and... it's awesome, it really is. "I designed every model made from 1964 to 1978."

YEOW.

I've not had near enough time this late winter/spring to fully harness his knowledge -- but with summer just around the corner, I think it's time to really start bugging him. LOL. So lots more information coming!

Last year I received a great contact in response to queries I had made from various corners attempting to gain information about the history of Mobile Scout. My queries for information were answered!

Mobile Scout was indeed a company that built travel trailers years ago. I will give you an update as I know the history. In the late 70s William Dozer Thornton who owned the company sold it to an investor group. It was bankrupted by the new owners in the early 80s. W. D. Thornton received the right to the name in the bankruptcy in exchange for the money that they still owed him.

In 1992 several of us that were involved in the RV industry started a new venture, SunnyBrook RV, Inc, with Tom Thornton being one of the partners. W.D. Thornton was Tom’s father and Tom owned several RV dealerships in Texas at the time. When we started producing units, Tom wanted his units built with the Mobile Scout name on them instead of SunnyBrook. Then several other Texas dealers also expressed interest in having their units built with the Mobile Scout name. So we acquired the right to use the name and have been building units with the Mobile Scout name on them ever since.

In December of 2010 SunnyBrook was acquired by Winnebago Industries. [...]

A big thanks to Elvie J. Frey, Sr. who is President of Winnebago Industries for putting all the pieces together for me!

(This information has been on the right sidebar for almost a year, but recent queries are proof that wasn't a good spot for it; people were missing it.)AMYhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11333769544724745564noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7234857209740225429.post-69538316830718234492013-03-31T10:51:00.000-07:002013-03-31T10:51:26.585-07:00More and more... People are now taking notice of my please for DOCUMENTS. I'm getting a few people sending in good clear photos (at high resolution, so you can actually read them) of their owner documents. THANK YOU. I'm adding them to the library, and will post a link to the library once I get it all in order.
And MORE Mobile Scout builders/employees have found us and are watching us! Says James P., "I have been in contact with a couple other people who were in management in the sixty's. And we are following your blog site keep up the good work."

I can't thank James enough for the photos he's sending. You're going to LOVE them! (I know, I know, I'm teasing and just need to show you.)
I promise, I will!
Summer is gearing up -- where are YOU going with your Mobile Scout? Scot and I are kicking off the camping year at a vintage camper rally at Milo McIver State Park here in the PNW in May. Next weekend we plan to do like the Boy Scouts do and welcome spring by pulling out all of our gear, washing up Beatrice (our vintage Mobile Scout you see in the header), and making sure we are well stocked. I'm sure we'll get her out for a little brief weekend before the vintage camper rally.

Let me know you're reading by posting a comment to this thread -- with your plans for the summer or just your love of the little tin cans!
